Pleasures of the Aesthetics


Familliarity induces pleasure but not excitement. Both are needed for good design. Indeed a good design is a novel composition of familliar elements.
Such a composition should trigger the exeperience of liking without it being subject to any interest (Toshimasa YAMANAKA, 2015, Defining the Japanese Art of Design, Nature 514(7521)).

Beauty should be understood as an object's form of purposiveness that is perceived without the presentation of a purpose (Immanuel KANT, 1790 (tr. 1987) Critique of Judgment). It is what without a concept is understood as the object of an intuitive liking.
